Community Base Open Day.
14th January 2004

Over 300 people attended the Community Base Openday.

In December 2003 Community Base held an essay competition for secondary school students in Brighton and Hove asking them to tell us what they thought made a community a good community. There were two categories, aged up to 13 and aged 14 and over.

I would like to share with you extracts from the Community Base Essay Competition. (full text at www.communitybase.org/essay.htm)

Title of Essay: What makes a Community?

Under-14. Winner. AB Dorothy Stringer.

“There are many things that make a community and one of the main ones are rules. You can have many rules but they have to be secure. In some communities you can have loads and loads of rules but I think that you should have a few rules that really get to the point. I think that some of the rules should include
No racist comments
No sexist comments
And no violence
I think that if a community sticks by these rules it would become a good community...”

Over-14. Winner. ZG, Patcham House Special School.

“Before I moved to Moulsecoomb I never went out so used to be stuck in my house all the time doing nothing. Where I lived no one would help each other and no one would be there to list. That is not a good community! However in Moulsecoomb people help each other and stick by each other. This is a sign of a healthy community…”
